Mahjong continues to be one of the Hamptons’ favorite ways to gather. The Mahjong House and the American Mahjong Society hosted an afternoon of mahjong, shopping and connection at the Hill House Home in Sag Harbor and we were delighted to practice our skills.
We spent the afternoon learning more about the game while surrounded by beautiful tablescapes, colorful hand-painted tiles, and Hill House Home’s latest collection. The boutique was transformed into an elegant mahjong destination, with games taking place throughout the store and spilling into the garden, creating a relaxed setting that encouraged conversation and connection.
Stacey White, founder of The Mahjong House, welcomed players of every skill level with beginner instruction and game strategy while introducing guests to the American Mahjong Society’s annual card, created by founder Ingrid Figueiredo. Throughout the afternoon, experienced players explored new hands while first-timers quickly discovered why the game has become such a social phenomenon.
Guests sipped Wölffer Estate rosé, browsed Hill House Home’s signature dresses and home collection, and played with The Mahjong House’s stunning hand-painted tile sets. As a thoughtful parting gift, each guest left with a beautifully designed travel mahjong set, making it easy to bring the game to beach weekends, dinner parties, or wherever summer adventures lead.
“Mahjong has always been about so much more than the tiles—it’s about the people you gather around the table,” said Stacey White, founder of The Mahjong House. “Teaching beginners is my favorite thing in the world because you get to watch strangers become friends over the course of a single afternoon.”
For Ingrid Figueiredo, founder of the American Mahjong Society, the afternoon was the perfect opportunity to introduce players to a fresh take on the classic game. Inspired to create more variety than a single annual card could offer, her organization developed a new card that brings additional strategy and excitement while staying true to traditional American mahjong rules.
With beautifully designed sets, stylish surroundings, and an afternoon centered on community, it’s easy to see why mahjong has become one of the Hamptons’ favorite social traditions.
